“If Ron Paul is behind it, and it has nothing to do with foreign policy, I agree.”
-Ann Coulter
The Straw Poll conducted at CPAC this year, and the results that show Ron Paul being the #1 choice of attendees to be the Republican nomination for President of the United States, has attracted a lot of attention. Unfortunately the numbers behind this straw poll are skewed beyond the point of relevancy.
(Insert witty joke here)
Now this isn't a hit piece on Ron Paul by any means, and I'm happy that his supporters have a win under their belt. That being said there are too many people out there who are making way too much of a deal about this. I'm a firm believer that a picture is worth a thousand words, so let's take a look at the slides they presented during the results of the Straw Poll.
This is less than 1/4 of all the registered attendees.
There was no "Straw Pole Primary." Who knows who decided what names would be on the ballot?
Students were allowed entry for as little as $20. It's worth noting that one of the cosponsors was "Campaign For Liberty," which happens to be Ron & Rand Paul's organization.
So what does this all mean? It means that a majority of the votes came from male college students between the ages of 18-25. This isn't quite the most influential voting demographic. Please by all means if you're a Ron Paul supporter enjoy the victory, but don't get delusions of grandeur.
